Usenet and Newsgroups - How to configure them

Usenet and Newsgroups- The other magnificent aspect of internet which provides you a forum to interact on almost all the topics you can imagine. A lot of people are not aware of this aspect of internet and they are just wondering over the vastness of information available at websites, but if you will learn and explore the usenets, you will find that here is a lot worth attention.I am not going into details of it, as what is Usenet and Newsgroups, in simple terms its platform for the users, to interact with likeminded people on the topic of their choice. We just have to configure our newsreader (its always there in the form of Outlook Express) and choose an NNTP server and you are ready to take a plunge into the vast world of newsgroups. There are a lot of free NNTP server, which you can use. Here is step wise instruction to configure your internet newsgroup reader. I am using Outlook Express, its very good and there is no need to install any other software for that.
1. Open Outlook Express ( Start>>Program>>Outlook Express) if it is not your default mail client, it will ask you whether you want to make it default mail client or not. Just click no, if you are not using a mail client for accessing mail, it has nothing to do with the configuration of Newsreader. It will ask whether you want to continue with the Internet
2. Now in Outlook Express Menubar, go to ( Tool>>Accounts>>News>>Add>>News ) Click on it and a popup window will ask for your name, enter your name and then in next window, your email address you want to use for newsgroups. The third window will ask for name of NNTP server, enter the name of the NNTP server, if you dont know of any good server dont worry, just use Microsofts Free news server news.microsoft.com . And Click on Close. As soon as you will click on the Close a window will appear and will ask that whether you want to download the list of newsgroups on the server. click yes. It will start downloading the list of newsgroups. A good server has more than 1000 newsgroups on it. So it will take a few minutes to download the whole newsgrop list, but you can cancel it midway and download it later.
3. Click on the newsgroup you want to subscribe and click on the Subscribe tab. or Simply Click twice. Now you are ready to read or post messages to this newsgroup. When you will clikc on the the subscribed newsgroup, it will start downloading the messages under that group and you can choose which message you want ot rea. You can post to that group by going to (New Post )on the menu bar. These are simple three steps to configure your newsgroup. Two Verygood Free NNTP Servers.
Both NNTP servers are absolutely free and you have more than 4000 newsgroups on each of these servers. To configure these server you can just simply click over the name of the server and they will automatically be added to your server list, or you can also enter them manually.

Hi! Thanks for this post.
I have a couple of Usenet newsgroups configured on Outlook Express. I receive the messages, but everytime I try to post I get an error (it’s pasted below). I’m using freenews.netfront.net.
The error message is pasted below:
Conta: ‘freenews.netfront.net’, Servidor: ‘freenews.netfront.net’, Protocol: NNTP, Resposta do servidor: ‘441 You are not allowed to post to rec.sport.soccer’, Porta: 119, Segura (SSL): Não, Erro do servidor: 441, Nº do erro: 0×800CCCA9
Thank you very much in advance!
Same problem, Luiz.
I receive all messages from rec.radio.shortwave and when I try to reply I get the message:
“Sending of message failed. The message could not be posted because connecting to the news server failed. The server may be unavailable [I've been trying for days!] or is refusing connections. Please verify that your news server setting is correct [it's why I'm here] and try again, or else contact your network administrator.”
What now, Santosh?
For the
freetext.usenetserver.com
I cannot post new messages or reply.
Any help?
