Mushrooming Growth of Social Networking Sites
The success of MySpace.com and orkut.com has given birth to many such social networking sites. Everyday you open your mail box and find that xyz has invited you to be his/her friend. MySpace growth has been a phenomenal, and the claim that it will outperform yahoo.com in terms of click per day is not an overstatement.
Personally out of these too, I have been a great admirer of Orkut, as you come in touch with people you know. Even to see someones profile you have to be a member of Orkut. The absence of ads (unlike MySpace) makes it clutterfree, and there are almost all the features of social networking site. The only thing lacking in comparision to others ,is blog module in Orkut. I see all the possibility of Orkut and Blogger coming together (as both are now part of Google), and giving a tough competition to MySpace.
Seeing the growth of blogsites and social networking site, both Microsoft (http://spaces.msn.com) and Yahoo (http://360.yahoo.com) have come up with best features of blogs and Social Networking sites inMSN Spaces and Yahoo 360. But they are comparatively new player and do not possess any threat at the moment to MySpace. MSN Spaces and Yahoo 360, seem to be suffering from identity crises. As they are neither preferred as Social Networking Sites nor as blog sites. Both MSN Spaces and Yahoo 360 are not the preferred platform for serious bloggers due to lack of customization. Blogger.com and WordPress.com along with livejournal.com are the main options for serious bloggers, who want free and good blogging platform.
Some new noteworthy sites which are getting a lot of attention as well as new users are MyYearbook (has all the potential to give MySpace a tough competition), Hi5, Ringo, YouTube (here you can post your video blogs) and Plum (though Plum is still availble on invitation only). Another networking site whicm aims at bringing people together for a cause (saving environment, climate change, helping needy etc..) isCare2 whic has some really good features and a novel concept.
For, the best blogging site is still blogger.com and best Social Networking Site is Orkut. MySpace might be a craze, but certainly i would prefer Orkut and Blogger than MySpace.
